Life Tip: Listening to Your iPod in the Office

This is a Life Tip, a quick post detailing a small suggestion to make your life (or the ones of those around you) better. Your mileage may vary; some tips are targeted to a fairly small audience, while some apply to almost everyone. Regardless of content, I cannot be held liable for anything bad that happens.

Almost every office has one of those guys: the one who is way too attached to his iPod. Not only does he listen to it at his desk, but when he gets up to grab some coffee, get something from his car, or go to the bathroom, he takes it with him so he can continue listening while walking around the office.

If you are that person, let me fill you in on something: everyone else thinks that's weird. Not only does it put off a bit of a creeper vibe (it seems most prevalent in quiet, mid-40s males who always wear dress shirts with front pockets to hold the iPod), but it tells others in no uncertain terms that you don't want to interact with them. Maybe you don't want to be disturbed while you're working, and that's fine; throw on those earbuds or headphones at your desk to let people know you're deep in something and don't want to be bothered. We've all been there. But when you actually take them with you during break room trips, you are effectively saying, "Regardless of whether I'm busy, I have no interest in talking with any of you."

On a professional level, it's not great since the people surrounding you are more than likely the ones who help you do your job or determine your next raise. You will eventually need something from them, and giving them the equivalent of a brush-off every time you pass each other in the hall isn't the best way to build a feeling of camaraderie. You're also probably missing out on helpful information you might pick up from random conversations or even overheard ones.

On a personal level, you're robbing yourself of what could be some pretty cool relationships. If you work a standard full-time job, you probably spend more time with these people than your family, and considering you go through a lot of the same trials, having a few coworkers with whom you can vent or simply take a break from the day's tasks can be a huge help. At least better than listening to the next track on your playlist.

So leave the earbuds at your desk. Say good morning to people in the hallway, make eye contact with people in the break room, and maybe even strike up a conversation with the person two desks down. You don't have to plan parties or be the office cutup; just make yourself available for normal human contact instead of walling yourself off by listening to that Steely Dan album for the 127th time.

  1. My name is Fajar. I live in  Bedono in Central Java   I was in a very chronic financial issue and terminal health situation some few weeks back. After all my search for assistance from friends and neighbors proved abortive, I feel there was no one who truly cares. I became so exhausted due to lack of funds to expand my business and my 2 kids aged 5 and 8 were also not good looking due to lack of proper care as a result of finance. One faithful morning I saw an old time friend of my late husband and I told him all I have been going through and he said the only way he could help was to direct me to a good loan officer in USA that also helped him, He explained to me on how he was financially down and how he got boosted by this loan officer ( Mr Pedro   who grant him 7,000,000.00 USD loan at an affordable rate of 2% rate . He further assured me that they were the only legit loan firm he found online. He gave me their email &  That was how i applied and was also granted a loan and my life changed for the good. CONTACT THE ONLY GENUINE LENDER Mr Pedro VIA    Email /  Whatsapp +18632310632   pedroloanss@gmail.com  to resolve your financial mess.
